Monica's Scary Movie
(or: You Will Never Wear Flip-flops to a Movie Again!)

How's this for a horror story. Last night hubby took me to see the new Harry Potter at one of those classic old theaters in our neighborhood (one I've been going to for most of my life). It's become a little run-down over the years, but it's got all the gilding, red velvet seats, organist at some shows, etc.
Anyway, about ten minutes from the end of the movie, I hear something shuffling. I look down and see--I kid you not--a huge rat. It was about 6-8 inches long (not counting the tail). To say I was freaked out was an understatement. I think my poor hubby thought he was going to have to carry me out of there. Serious "damsel-in-distress" moment. This is one of those reasons why I married a big strong guy!
The worst part was that when I told the manager, he (and the other two employees standing there) had absolutely blank expressions on their faces (i.e. no shock). He was very blase and said he was "sorry." I got the feeling that (a) he wasn't surprised and (b) he wasn't that concerned. After I went on for a while, he finally said he was going to call the exterminator "right now" (at 8:30 pm?). Needless to say, I won't be going back.
I'm still freaking out. A dark theater, bare ankles, scary movie and a rodent DO NOT MIX.
Anything icky like this ever happen to you? What's the scariest movie you've ever seen?

Eww. Free range rodents and bare toes do not mix. I couldn't wear flip-flops to a theatre anyway - the sticky floors gross me out.
Scariest movie I ever saw: Hellraiser II. If I think about too long it still scares the bejeebers out of me.
OH. MY. OK, Monica, it's been years *blushing* since I've been into a movie theatre and now I'm thinking it's going to be a few more! Yikes!!! EEEEEEE!!! I can't stand rodents of any size, and certainly not in close proximity! I'm the one calling the exterminator at the first scritching sounds coming from the roof!
Scariest movie I've ever seen? Nothing in recent memory--I avoid scary stuff like the plague because I'm deeply, deeply chicken!
B.E., I'm with you on the sticky floors. After thinking about it more, I'm surprised you don't hear about this kind of thing more. We were supposed to go see another movie last night, but I couldn't do it.
I haven't seen the Hellraiser movies. I think my scariest horror film was the original Nightmare on Elm Street. The movie that freaked me out the most though:Silence of the Lambs. That was the only movie I've ever said to my hubby, "I need a drink."
Flchen,
I can't stand rodents of any size either. Seriously, I was freaking out. Too funny about the no scary movies. You sound like my daughter, LOL. She is such a little chicken!
I agree that Pinhead was scary. "The Exorcist" was one of the scariest movies I've ever seen.
Jane,
I completely agree about the exorcist. My parents wouldn't let me see it when it first came out--probably a good thing. I used to love horror/slasher films when I was a teenager, but can't take them at all anymore.
OMG! I can't believe that actually happened to you! That is one of those situations that you only can only hope is in the "urban legend" category of nightmarish possibilities! I can't believe it really happened!!!
Gross, gross, ick!!!
I would have completely flipped out!
The worst I have ever come close to that situation was at Disney World's 'Honey I SHrunk The Kids' 3D movie. They have a simulated experience of something furry running across your feet. Disgusting.
I think you're right about skipping the movie. It's kind of like post traumatic stress... it would take a LONG time for me to get over that!
This is my rodent story if you're interested....

(not sure how to make this link... but it's in my 11/15/2008 archives)
Tara,
I would have crashed the car--seriously. It makes me jumpy just thinking about having mice come out of the dashboard. Sorry to add to your paranoia. You and I must be the same--irrational fear of rodents anyway. I was probably the worst person to have something like this happen to, LOL.
We've been to the HISTK at Disney--what really freaked me out was the hard poke in the back.
eeewwww!!!!
My mousie story is from Carl's Jr. I had one skitter across my foot (also flip-flop clad...we wear them year-round in Vegas) and my dad just shrugged and finished his food! my mom and sis and I FREAKED...
scariest movie? A creepy "true" story call the Entity...some of the boys on my hockey team got me to watch it...shudder...I don't watch scary movies anymore and Isleep with a nightlight :)
I'm so glad I'm not alone in my rodent paranoia. OMG at a restaurant, ick. I had a pretty bad restaurant experience in college once. A cockroach in the beans...seriously. Good thing I haven't eaten at Carls Jr. in a long time, LOL (bad bacon cheeseburger years ago left lasting memories!). Love how your Dad just sat there--typical guy! I've never heard of Entity, will have to look it up on IMDB.
That's tops it all. I only go to the movies about once a yr..and I'm not a flip flop wearer. haha
We are huge movie goers so this has definitely put a cramp in our routine. I haven't been able to go back yet, but I do want to see Julie and Julia...
The 'Time Traveler's Wife' looks like it's going to be a real tearjerker!!!!
I'm REALLY looking forward to that one, if I can force myself into the theater, LOL. I nearly cried at the previews! It's funny because I read the book, but didn't "love" it as much as everyone else.
Ewwww...I feel all creeped out now after reading all this..lol! Nothing like this has ever happened to me so far...thank you GOD and knock on wood! :)
Definitely knock on wood. Seriously, I'm still grossed out. We usually go to movies a couple times a month, but I haven't been able to go back yet.
